WBSC U-16 World Cup alum Julio Urias closes World Series for champions Dodgers

The native of Culiacan helped the youth Mexican National Team to a fourth-place finish in 2011 and pitched 2.1 innings in the bronze medal game, the same workload he had during Game 6 of the Fall Classic. The outcome was very different.

WBSC World Cup alum Julio Urias helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win Game 6 of the Major League Baseball (MLB) World Series, the team's first title since 1988, with a seven-out save.

Urias, the seventh pitcher of the night for Los Angeles, entered the game with the Dodgers leading 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch-runner Brett Phillips represented the tying run at first base. Urias struck out pinch hitter Yandy Diaz on four pitches to end the inning. He then went on to retire the side in order in the eighth and the ninth.

Julio Urias was born Culiacan Rosales, Mexico, on 8 December 1996. He made his MLB debut for the Dodgers in 2016. He has appeared in 74 MLB games for Los Angeles since then, including 11 during the 2020 season.

Urias is nicknamed El Chulichi, which stands for a native of Culiacan. He played on Mexico's National Team at the 2011 IBAF XIII World Youth (or U-16) Baseball Championship (now the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup) played on home soil in Lagos de Moreno. Mexico finished fourth, and Urias pitched 2.1 innings in the bronze medal game that Mexico lost, 8-2, against Japan.

Urias spoke to MLB Network's Jon Morosi after the game. He wore a Mexican flag on his shoulders and expressed a lot of pride for his heritage.

The Dodgers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 in game 6 to close out the series. A solo home run by Cuban stand out Randy Arozarena, the 10th in his record-breaking postseason, represented the only run by the Rays.
