Australia rally in the fifth to beat Mexico

Australia scored one in the first and extended the lead in the fifth, en route to a 4-2 win.

World No. 9 Australia was the first team in Group A to play their second game at the XXXI WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup and pocketed a win against World No. 3 Mexico, 4-2.

Early in the first, Australia loaded the bases and took the lead on a wild pitch, sending Callum Donnelly home, 1-0.

Mexico soon tied the game in the third, 1-1, with Angel Ramirez’s on a defensive error.

At the top of the fourth, Australia got out of the jam with a great 1-2-3 double play and another out, stopping Mexico from scoring with a bases-loaded situation.

Australia retook the lead with Lachlan Smith’s single to centre field at the bottom of the fifth, sending Tom Chessel back home. Right after, with Joshua Davies’ two-RBI single to centre field again, Australia extended the lead to 4-1.

At the top of the seventh, Mexico’s Jorge Hernandez earned a run with Antonis Macias’ sacrifice fly to right field, catching up at 4-2. Still, Australia finished the game without giving Mexico any more chances to earn runs.

Australia will start Day 4 against Puerto Rico, while Mexico face Chinese Taipei in the afternoon game.
