The preliminary phase at the XXVI Pan-American 12U Baseball Championship in Barranquilla, Colombia ended on Tuesday with the Dominican Republic and Colombia concluding the first round with victories. Panama remained at the top of the standings with a perfect 4-0 record, followed by Colombia (3-1), Brazil (2-2), the Dominican Republic (1-3) and Peru (0-4).
In the first game on Tuesday, the Dominican Republic defeated Peru 5-2 to earn their first win at the tournament. Juan Pablo De La Cruz went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI to lead the Dominican team. Tommy Adriel Almonte and Melvin Manuel Ortiz collected two hits apiece. Delvis Polanco Veras allowed one hit, one run and four walks in four innings to pick up the win. Rodrigo Rey Salinas pitched five innings for Peru to take the loss.
In the second game Colombia secured second place in the first-round standings, beating Brazil 6-2. Three runs in the second and three in the fourth sealed the win for the host. Nelson Quintero homered, scored twice and drove in three for the Colombian squad. Nestor Carta had three hits. Santiago Florez gave up one run on five hits and two walks in five innings to earn the win. Christian Rummel Pedrosa was charged with the loss, issuing eight hits, six runs and six walks in 4 2/3 innings.
