XXXI WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup Day 7: Chinese Taipei finish group play undefeated; Korea-Puerto Rico and Czechia-Mexico postponed

Korea-Puerto Rico was called, with Korea leading 5-1 in the second and will resume on Thursday, 7 September, at Tianmu Stadium in Taipei City. Czechia-Mexico was also postponed and will be rescheduled at a date and time to be determined. Chinese Taipei beat Puerto Rico and will head to the Super Round as the first-place team from Group A with a 2-0 record.

With inclement weather continuing to affect the XXXI WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup, only one of the three games scheduled for last day of the group stage on Wednesday could be completed in Taichung.

Chinese Taipei won the morning game against Puerto Rico to finish group play undefeated and will head to the Super Round as the only team with a 2-0 record.

The game between Puerto Rico and Korea was suspended twice and finally called, with Korea leading 5-1 in the top of the third. The game will resume on Thursday, 7 September, at 09:00 (local time) at Tianmu Stadium in Taipei City.

The loser will finish in third-place in Group A (0-2 record in the Super Round) and play against the third-placed team from Group B, the Netherlands, at 11:30 (local time).

The winner will become the second-place finisher from Group A (1-1 record in the Super Round) and play the afternoon game against Group B's second-place finisher, the United States, at 14:30 (local time).

TOURNAMENT PASS

Puerto Rico @ Korea

Puerto Rico got to starter Kiho Park, loading the bases with no one out. Kim got the first out on strikes, then walked in the first run. Soon after, the umpiring crew called the game because of heavy rain.

Taekyeon Kim took the mound as the game resumed. He struck out the side to get out of the inning.

Puerto Rico's starter Dicky Gonzalez retired the leadoff hitter, then loaded the bases allowing a double to Anseok Jeong and two walks.

He allowed a couple of two-out walks to give Korea the lead, then Sangiun Lee hit a three-RBI double to left field, extending the lead to 5-1.

More rain forced the postponement of the game. It will resume at Tianmu Stadium in Taipei City on Thursday, 7 September, at 9 am.

Chinese Taipei-Puerto Rico 16-2

Chinese Taipei took advantage of a shaky start by Puerto Rico's pitchers and defence to open the score in the first. They added three home runs on their way to a mercy rule win in five innings to finish Group A undefeated.

Chinese Taipei Yi Lei Sun got out of the first starting an inning-ending double play.

Puerto Rico's starter, Alexis Martinez, couldn't get out of the first inning. He walked the first two batters, and Chinese Taipei advanced them on a bunt. The first run was scored on an error, and Martinez loaded the bases with a walk.

Puerto Rico got the first out at home on Shao Yu Hsu's grounder, then Martinez allowed another walk and left for Carlos Yazmin. The other runs scored on a defensive error, and a balk, and Chinese Taipei extended the lead to 5-0.

Chinese Taipei went at bat 13 times in the bottom of the second and collected seven hits, including two home runs by second baseman Chao Hung Chang, a two-run shot against Yazmin and a three-run homer against Henry Clausell.

Centre fielder Ching Hsien Ko added another home run in the bottom of the fourth.

Puerto Rico got four of their six hits in the top of the fifth, three against Wei Che Tseng and one against Chia Wai Lin. They scored two runs, not enough to avoid the game ending on the mercy rule.
