Nicaragua suspends the 'Germán Pomares' National Baseball Championship due to COVID-19

The plan is to resume play on Friday, 5 June. Before the suspension, Santos Jarquín pitcher the first no-hitter of the season

The Nicaragua's Superior Baseball Commission (CNBS, Comision Nicaraguense de Béisbol Superior) has honoured a request by the teams to suspend the Germán Pomares National Baseball Championship (Campeonato Nacional de Béisbol Superior Germán Pomares), due to COVID-19 safety measures.

The tournament will resume on Friday, 5 June.

The 18-team championship was in the middle of the 12 team-second round, that will end with the current standings. The clubs involved will discuss details about the rest of the season with CNBS on Thursday, 28 May.

Before the suspension, on Sunday, 17 May, Santos Jarquín, pitched for the first place Indios del Bóer the first no-hitter of the 2020 season. Jarquín went the distance, and struck out 12, to defeat San Fernando Masaya, 1-0.

CNBS is formed by the Baseball Federation (Federación Nicaraguense de Beisbol Asociados, FENIBA) and the Nicaraguan Institute of Sports (Instituto Nicaraguense de Deportes, IND).

The Pomares National Championship represents the second level of baseball played in Nicaragua after the four-team professional league (Liga de Béisbol Profesional Nacional, LBPN).

The National Championship was first played in 1970. Since the 2009 edition, it is organized by the CNBS.
