Right-handed pitcher Diego Morales was on fire once more after striking out nine Mexico batters to lift Guatemala to the U-18 Men’s Softball World Cup Super Round with a 4-3 win over Mexico. They finish the preliminary round with a 3:2 win:loss card.
Morales pitched seven innings allowing 7 hits and 3 runs to earn the victory for Guatemala, and Diego Guerra hit 2 RBIs in their win. Mexican pitcher Marco Diaz lost the game, with four strikeouts in four innings.
Mexican clean-up hitter Jesus Rivera immediately plated Eloy Flores and Abelardo Penuelas before Josue Martinez launched an RBI triple for a 3-0 start for Mexico in the first. But Guerra hit back by firing a double to the center field bring Dilan Gonzalez and Morales in and close the inning down by just a run 3-2.
In the third inning, Guatemalan first baseman Alejandro Rojas hit a grounder to plate Juan Medina and bring the match to a deadlock. The game-winning run was scored by Jonathan Cajina in the fifth episode, on a wild pitch.
In the seventh, Mexico hit back-to-back singles with one out, but Morales shut out Mexican batters with a pop up fly and a strikeout, for the 4-3 win for Guatemala.
