18U BWC: Canada overpowers Mexico in fifth inning rally

The maple-leafed had a final 7-run comeback with JD Osborne’s grand slam

DOU-LIOU STADIUM. Canada built a big, seven-run fifth out of Mexico’s bullpen to get an 11-4 victory on Day 3 of the 18U Baseball World Cup in Taichung.

After the Latin Americans had took an early lead with 2 runs in the second, because of a single, two walks allowed by Stevenson, and an error by shortstop Collymore, they went 0-3 in the top of the fifth, also because Collymore missed the catch on Avila’s grounder and Ponce sent the teammate home with a double to the left field.

After a first run for Canada in the fifth, out of three singles by Handley, Lumley and O’Neill, Escamilla replaced Balboa on the mound, but the change could not stop the North American lineup, who collected three more walks and got a grand-slam homer by John-Daniel Osborne, to take a 7-3 lead.

Canada hit two doubles, with Osborne and Thibideau, and 2 singles, with Lumley (3 for 4) and Collymore (3 RBIs in the game), in the eighth, while Mexico collected two doubles in the ninth, from Rodriguez and Mercado, against closer Bigras, to produce the fourth run,not enough to give the maple-leafed team big troubles.

Canada goes 2-2 and will play Japan tomorrow, while Mexico (1-3) will face Chinese Taipei at the Intercontinental Stadium for the closing game of Round 1 of the 2013 18U Baseball World Cup.
