18U BWC: Cuba with 8 Runs in 2nd to Win over Colombia

Cuba improved to 3-0 with light morning work at Intercontinental Stadium

INTERCONTINENTAL STADIUM. Cuba remains undefeated in the XXVI 18U Baseball World Cup with a 10-0 seven-inning win over Colombia on Tuesday morning at Intercontinental Stadium in Taichung. Skipping batting practice before the game they didn’t miss a beat, as they scored eight runs in the second en route to an easy victory.

The big rally in the second was highlighted by a pair of two-run singles of Julio Martinez and Luis Roberts. Runs in the fourth and in the seventh helped to end the game early due to ten-run rule. Martinez had three RBI overall. Victor Mesa scored twice and drove in two.

Starting pitcher Ruben Hernandez meanwhile cruised to the win. He allowed just a two-out walk to Ronaldo Hernandez in the first and a two-out single to Carlos Vidal in the second. Colombia had two more base runners due to a pair of errors at short and second base, but never actually had an opportunity to score.

Colombia’s pitchers battled control problems throughout the entire game. Ezequiel Zabaleta took the loss, surrendering five hits, eight runs and four walks in 1 1/3 frames. Hernando Chiquillo (4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 9 BB) was able to keep Cuba in check despite his nine free passes.

Both teams will be back on the field in the evening. Cuba will clash with Team USA at Intercontinental Stadium. Colombia travels to Dou-Liou for a game against Italy.
