WBSC reveals 2021-2029 calendar for Youth, Women’s Baseball World Cups and format change
26/02/2021
One of the main changes includes turning the Women’s Baseball World Cup into a four-year cycle event, similar to Premier12, giving all participating Member Federations more time to prepare and compete and setting up a more balanced and efficient competition calendar.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) today announced the 2021-2029 Baseball World Cup calendar, as well as a new competition format to the Women’s Baseball World Cup.

The 2021 calendar includes the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup in Tainan, TPE, the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Sarasota and Bradenton, Florida, USA and the U-23 Baseball World Cup in Ciudad Obregon and Los Mochis, Mexico.

The U-12, U-15, U-18 and U-23 Baseball World Cups will then continue on a two-year cycle until 2029 and will keep the same format.

The U-15 Baseball World Cup and the Women's Baseball World Cup, which were last staged in 2018 and originally part of the 2020 schedule, had been postponed to March 2021. The two events due to be played in Tijuana, Mexico have been further postponed and a final decision on their rescheduling is still under review.

Innovation and Opportunities

Following the pause in the WBSC’s international events calendar in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the WBSC took the opportunity to analyse and improve its competitions and events calendar to not only help the WBSC family mitigate the economic crisis the world is facing but also provide greater opportunities for teams to participate as well as for more cities to be able to host WBSC events.

One of the main modifications includes turning the Women’s Baseball World Cup into a four-year cycle event, similar to Premier12, giving all participating Member Federations more time to prepare and compete and setting up a more balanced and efficient competition calendar. All youth baseball world cups (U-12, U-15, U-18 and U-23) will remain as two-year cycle events.

As part of the review process, the WBSC Executive Board also approved a new, innovative competition system for the Women’s Baseball World Cup, named the “Two-Stage World Cup”.

New Women’s Baseball World Cup Format

The WBSC also announced the change of format of the Women's Baseball World Cup, which will become a two-stage tournament and shift from a two-year cycle to a four-year cycle.

The first stage, called Group Stage, will involve 12 National Teams that are split into two groups at different host sites. Hosts can now bid on and operate one group of the Women’s Baseball World Cup.

Ten of the 12 National Teams will qualify for the Group Stage of the Women's Baseball World Cup via the Continental Qualifiers: four each from the Americas and Asia, along with the respective European and Oceania champions. Two spots will be reserved for host nations. If one or both hosts are among the 10 qualified National Teams, the WBSC Executive Board will issue the needed number of Wild Cards.

At the end of the Group Stage, each group's top two finishers will qualify for the Finals. The fifth participant will be the host National Team and the sixth will be the best-ranked third-place team. If the host nation of the Finals is amongst the top four finishers of the Group Stage, both third-place National Teams will qualify.

The Women’s Baseball World Cup four-year cycle will begin in 2022 with Continental Qualifiers. The Group Stage of the Women’s Baseball World Cup is scheduled for 2023 and the Finals is scheduled for 2024.

Hosting Opportunities

A new bidding process for Baseball, Softball and Baseball5 World Cups has also been worked on in order to make the bidding process for WBSC World Cups more orderly, transparent and robust, as well as providing all interested members a clear view of the options available. Full details will be announced in a forthcoming release.
