Nicaragua remains unbeaten in placement round, secures seventh place at U-23 Baseball World Cup
Nicaragua dominated the Dominican Republic and cannot be reached at the top of the placement round.
Nicaragua secured the seventh position in the U-23 Baseball World Cup one day in advance with the second consecutive win in the placement round. The Netherlands and Korea also won.
It
took extra innings to determine the winner of the last European match-up of the
U-23 World Cup. The Netherlands scored three times in the bottom of the eighth
to emerge victorious over the Czech Republic by a final score of 9-8.
Marek
Chlup hit
the first home run of the tournament for the Czech Republic, adding a triple
and finishing the game with four RBI and two runs scored. Martin
Zelenka (2-for-3) and Matej Vlach (3-for-4) also
contributed in the biggest offensive outpouring of the tournament for the Czech
Republic.
Delano Selassa (1-for-4, 2 RBI)and Junior Martina (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) paced the offense for the Netherlands. Martina’s home run was his team’s second of the tournament.
Korea
scored six runs in the bottom of the third and went on to defeat Germany 9-1 on
Thursday afternoon in Ciudad Obregon. The big blow in the third was a
three run double off the bat of Kim
Doyeong.
Jo Hyowon andKo Myeongjun both added homers for Korea to close out the scoring. Germany’s Alexander Schmidt and David Dinski both extended their on-base streaks to seven games and Marco Cardoso drove in Germany’s lone run with a sixth inning double.
Nicaragua
remained unbeaten atop the placement round standings after handling the
Dominican Republic 12-3 in Thursday’s finale at Estadio Yaquis.
Elian
Miranda hit two home
runs and drove in five runs to help lead his team to victory. Four
different players turned in multi-hit performances for Nicaragua, with Milkar Perez and Alvaro Rubi each finishing the night
with three hits and an RBI. Starter Luis Castellon earned the win, striking out
five and allowing just one run in five innings of work.
Lizandro Quiñones andCristopher Pujols both finished the night with two hits for the Dominican Republic. Sandro Fabian homered for the second time in the tournament.
