Top-10 WBSC Baseball World Cup Plays of the Year: No. 3 Jack Bushell (Australia)

Australia's starting pitcher Jack Bushell made a spectacular play against Spain at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup.

Welcome back to the Top-10 WBSC Baseball Plays of the Year, a review of the best 10 plays in the WBSC Baseball World Cups in 2023. Australia's starting pitcher Jack Bushell made a spectacular play against Spain at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup.

Australia and Spain played their Placement Round game on 9 September at Taiching Stadium, with the two teams at the bottom of the standings. For Australia, which started the day with a 1-2 record, it was the first game of a doubleheader; while Spain had a 0-4 record.

With two outs and nobody on in the top of the third inning, Javier Miranda cracked Bushell's third pitch back up the middle. Bushell tried to field it but the ball came off his glove, rolling top second base territory. And Bushell not only got to the ball in a hurry, but made a backhanded play, flipping the ball to first base. The play was completed by first baseman Tom Chessell, who made a nice scoop to get Miranda out by a step.

Bushell pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout to get his second win of the tournament. He finished the World Cup with a 1.40 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 15 innings of work. Australia finished the tournament in 10th place.
